The Vision, Graphics and Computational Design (VGD) Group at HKUST led by Prof. Sai-Kit Yeung performs cutting-edge research on 3D contents reconstruction, understanding, modeling, and redesign, and uses AI techniques for design and content generation, human-robot interaction, and novel algorithms to enhance VR and AR applications.  

The VGD group is now working very closely with marine biologists, field ecologists, and coral conservationists to develop novel computer vision and graphics techniques and integrative systems to solve a wide range of marine related problems.

We have multiple postdoctoral positions with immediate opening. Topics include Multi-sensor SLAM, 3D Reconstruction, 3D Scene Understanding, Image Enhancement.

  1. Postdoctoral position in Multi-sensor SLAM (Immediate opening)
  2. We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow who has experience with stereo, multiple camera systems, sensor fusion, etc. The successful candidate is expected to develop and apply visual SLAM algorithms using normal cameras and/or consumer depth sensors on both indoor and outdoor scenes, as well as develop a version for underwater usage (with sonar) under different visbility conditions.

    Duration: 2 years and can be extended.

    Responsibility:

    • Develop novel approaches for 3D navigation with multimodal inputs, in particular for underwater environments
    • Implement algorithms and devise systems
    • Design experiment setups and run them
    • Drive research efforts towards papers for top-tier venues
    • Interact closely with different members in the research group
    • Writing testable code

    Desired Skills and Expertise:

    • PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or related areas.
    • Expertise in but not limited to SLAM, visual place recognition/localization, stereo, sensor fusion, depth estimation, OpenCV
    • Expertise in 3D information processing (point clouds, mesh, volume, etc)
    • Experience in implementing learning-based algorithms
    • Experience in 3D object detection or semantic segmentation will be a plus
    • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, constantly evolving and multidisciplinary environment
    • Strong interest in prototyping new software and writing conference and journal papers
    • Strong programming skill in C/C++, Python and/or Matlab
    • A strong publications record, at least one first author paper in top venues such as CVPR, ECCV, ICCV, TPAMI, IJCV, SIGGRAPH/SIGGRAPHAsia, TOG, TVCG, Eurographics, ICRA, IROS, RSS, etc.

  3. Postdoctoral position in 3D Reconstruction (Immediate opening)
  4. We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow who has experience in 3D reconstruction. The successful candidate is expected to develop and apply 3D reconstruction algorithms on objects and scenes with various scales. Applicants should have experience in multi-view stereo. Prior experience in photometric stereo, shape-from-shading, depth sensor and light field camera will be a plus.

    Duration: 2 years and can be extended.

    Responsibility:

    • Develop novel approaches for different parts of the 3D reconstruction pipeline in general and specific application scenarios such as marine environment
    • Implement algorithms and devise systems
    • Design experiment setups and run them
    • Drive research efforts towards papers for top-tier venues
    • Interact closely with different members in the research group
    • Writing testable code

    Desired Skills and Expertise:

    • PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or related areas.
    • Expertise in Multi-view stereo and Structure-from-motion
    • Expertise in feature descriptor extraction and matcthing
    • Familiar with optimization algorithms
    • Strong programming skill in C/C++, Python and/or Matlab
    • Strong interest in developing a general 3D reconstruction pipeline for marine setting
    • Expertise in OpenCV, OpenGL, OpenCL, Cuda or Open Inventor is preferable
    • Expertise in visual SLAM, visual odemetry, and image retrieval is preferable
    • A strong publications record, at least one first author paper in top venues such as CVPR, ECCV, ICCV, TPAMI, IJCV, SIGGRAPH/SIGGRAPHAsia, TOG, TVCG, Eurographics, ICRA, IROS, RSS, etc.

  5. Postdoctoral position in 3D Scene Understanding (Immediate opening)
  6. We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow who has experience in 3D scene understanding. The successful candidate is expected to develop different 3D scene understanding algorithms on different types of scenes. Applicants should have experience in 3D deep learning, 3D information processing. Prior experience in multi-view stereo, depth sensors, computer graphics will be a big plus.

    Duration: 2 years and can be extended.

    Responsibility:

    • Implement algorithms and devise systems
    • Design experiment setups and run them
    • Drive research efforts towards papers for top-tier venues
    • Interact closely with different members in the research group
    • Writing testable code

  7. Postdoctoral position in Image Processing (Immediate opening)
  8. We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow who has experience in image processing. The successful candidate is expected to develop different image processing and enhancement algorithms in particular to marine photography. Applicants should have experience in defogging, deraining, image restoration, etc. Prior experience in intrinsic image decomposition, lighting estimation will be a big plus.

    Duration: 2 years and can be extended.

    Responsibility:

    • Develop novel approaches for image enhancement in general and marine environments
    • Implement algorithms and devise systems
    • Design experiment setups and run them
    • Drive research efforts towards papers for top-tier venues

    • PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or related areas.
    • Expertise in low-level image enhancement, e.g., low-light enhancement, defog/deraining, image restoration, super resolution
    • Strong interest in underwater image enhancement and color restoration
    • Relative experience in domain adaptation and domain generalization
    • Relative experience in network compression and pruning (for real-time application)
    • Relative experience in signal processing (audio, image, image sequences)
    • Strong programming skill in C/C++, Python or Matlab.

  10. We provide generous scholarships for you to join our research. The standard Postgraduate Studentship (PGS) offers HKD$216,360 per year (~USD$27,700/year) which can well cover your tuition fee, accomodatin fee and other living costs. You are also welcomed to apply other schemes, such as:

    Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS)

    • Stipend: HKD$322,800 (~USD$41,400) per year, for 4 years*
    • RedBird PhD Scholarship: HK$40,000 (~US$5,100) in the first year of study
    • Conference Travel Allowance: HK$13,500 (~US$1,730) per year, for 4 years*; and
    • University Accommodation: Guaranteed in the first 2 years of research postgraduate studies
